2010 was the year of the iPad, 2011 will be the year of the tablet!

Posted by Paul Hanley

Apple currently dominates the tablet market, period. After the launch of the iPad in Spring 2010, Apple managed to shift around 15m units of the iPad world wide before the end of 2010 and not only leads sale with 90% of the market but is looking to increase sales massively with the launch of the thinner and faster iPad 2.

But whilst Apple currently has the tablet market pretty much to itself there are other devices launching now or in the not so distant future which have the potential to bite in to Apple's market share along with also helping to grow the tablet market.

Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab in Q4 of 2010 and it took 17% of world wide tablet sales in that quarter which is impressive enough in its own right considering the device is really nothing more than a large screen Android mobile phone (the same could also be argued that the iPad is nothing more than an iPhone with a large screen too).

Where things start getting interesting in the tablet market is the launch of products such as the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 and the LG 3D G-Slate, all of which run the brand new Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. This new version of Google's Android OS has specifically been created for tablet hardware and is a significant improvement over the more mobile phone orientated Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS.

We also have tablets from HP with their webOS based TouchPad (and webOS based Pre mobile phones to compliment the TouchPad) and BlackBerry with their Blackberry PlayBook tablet all set for launch between Q2 and Q3 of 2011.

The big question has to be though with all of these new tablets launching in 2011, how much effect will they have on Apple's dominance in this particular market sector. Whilst 10% of the projected 50m tablet sales for 2011 is still an impressive number will any of these other tablets. But as technologically advanced as they are will they be in a position to eat in to Apple's market share? Whilst not all price points have been set yet for the new tablets entering the market, tablets such as the Motorola Xoom have been set at a very similar price level to the competing Apple iPad and companies will find it difficult to out "Apple" Apple at same price point.

Apple is in the process of making the iPad the next stage of computing and the de-facto standard for both look and feel and how consumers want their software to look and work. But Apple has plans go further than this, not only do they want to own the market they want to define the idea of the market. We only have to look back to how their previous efforts with the iPod and the iPhone have turned out to get  some kind of idea of how this one may play.

In a Samsung Galaxy Far Far Away someone’s talking Tabs …

Posted by Vernon

It's been widely reported that the use of Tablet PC and Smartphone devices in the workspace will sky rocket over the next three years - couple this with the explosion of Cloud Computing and we have a new revolution. The Tablet Revolution ? The Cloud Revolution ? Who cares what the terminology is - the point is this is a very exciting time to be at the forefront of this technology.

Here at Cleverboxes, we take our technology very seriously - we embrace new technology as it arrives - we had the Apple iPad 2 weeks before it's official European release and had it remote desktoping into our servers allowing our Tech gurus access to our web servers on the move, with a 'big screen' - anyone else had Windows on an iPad ???

We are about to post the review on the Samsung Galaxy - watch this space - how does it compare to the iPad ? We also did a review comparing the iPad and the Archos 101 Tablet - watch the video here.

Myself and my co director are attending the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas in January 2011 where the major brands (Sony, HP, Cisco etc.) are promising to show case their new Tablets. We'll bring you the very latest news and reviews plus exclusive insights into the world of Cloud and Tablet Tech ...

We're also working on the launch of our new specialist division - focussing on Cloud Computing, not only offering Cloud Technology to the IT buying community but also offering the devices that make the convergence of this technology extremely exciting ...

The Cisco Cius – Business Class Android Tablet

Posted by Sarge

The Cisco Cius is a mobile collaborative device that, unlike other tablets, such as Apple's iPad, is specially designed for business users, it weighs around 520g and offers HD video streaming and real-time video, multi-party conferencing, email, messaging, browsing, and the ability to produce, edit and share content stored locally or centrally in the cloud.

"Based on the Android operating system, Cisco Cius is an open platform for communication and collaboration whose form factor and applications are designed to more securely connect employees on-the-go with the right people in real-time, and to provide those workers with the ability to access and share the content they need from any place on the network", says Cisco.

Google Android is used in a number of smartphones and a growing number of tablet PCs. Cisco says the advantage of using the operating system is that it will allow the company's business customers to tap into the growing Android developer community, which is developing new business-class products.

Tech specs of the new device include; a front mounted 720p HD camera, which refreshes at up to 30 frames per second; a 5-megapixel rear facing camera, that can transmit streaming VGA quality video and capture still images, dual noise-cancelling microphones for audio conferencing and a 7-inch, high-resolution widescreen super VGA touch-target display.

Elsewhere there is an on-board accelerometer, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity offered. Bluetooth and Micro-USB means users can work untethered and share data with a PC, while a detachable and serviceable battery offers 8 hours life under normal usage.

The Cius will be available in the UK soon and should retail at around £650 and although it is one of the most expensive tablets to be announced, to date, it is also one of the most powerful.

Viewsonic announces Android tablets, Viewpad 7 & Viewpad 10

Posted by Sarge

ViewSonic Logo

Yesterday, Monday 1st November 2010, Viewsonic announced its Viewpad line of Android-based tablets, including the Viewpad 7 and Viewpad 10.

ViewSonic Viewpad 7

The Viewpad 7 is a 7-inch Android 2.2 tablet  that will retail for around £350 and is expected to go on sale in late Q4 2010. The Viewsonic includes all the Google Mobile services and will also have a 3G SIM slot, meaning on the go data use, as well as a VGA front facing camera and 3MP snapper on the rear.  The Android tablet will also have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and VoIP internet calling as standard.

ViewSonic also promises that the new tablet will have handwritten note-taking capabilities, despite packing a capacitive screen, so we're assuming a special stylus might be included in the package.

The UK price is set to be around £350, although we've yet to learn of a specific UK release date. However, review samples are expected in early October, so hopefully it won't be too long after that.

Then there is the Viewpad 10, which is a dual-boot 10-inch tablet running Windows 7 Home Premium and Android 1.6. This device will be available in Q1 2011 for around the price of £450. It features a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom processor, 1 GB or memory, 16 GB SSD hard drive, and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. I would also avoid this device since it uses Android 1.6 and the 10-inch LED display only runs at a resolution of 1024 x 600.

Keep checking back on the Cleverboxes website and blog for more information on this and other leading edge technology products, or call today on: 01254 238 749

HP Announces Windows 7 Slate 500 Aimed At Business Users

Posted by Garth Vader

HP has finally taken the wrapper of its tablet device, the HP Slate 500, and announced that it is coming to the US.

It's been a long time coming for the HP Slate 500. Prototypes of the device were at CES 2010 back in January and it has been 10 long months since that announcement.

Tablet talk

Inside is an Intel 1.86GHz Atom Z540 processor, Graphics Media Accelerator 500 chip, 2GB of RAM and 64GB SSD.

The resolution of the 8.9-inch screen is 1024×600 and thanks to a Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator, it should play hi-def content without a hitch.

There are also two cameras on the HP Slate 500 – a VGA on the front and a 3MP camera on the rear.

The tablet also makes use of a Wacom active digitizer, so the device is primed for note taking and it uses Windows 7 as its OS.

The HP Slate 500 will be available first from the US for $599. A UK release date is not yet set, though. Apparently the Slate will be "evaluated for further market expansion".
